Calculation Steps
Step 1: Measure the project area in square feet.
Step 2: Select the carpet material and note its cost range.
Step 3: Add the fixed costs for labor, additional materials, padding, and optionally carpet removal.
Step 4: Calculate the total cost and cost per square foot.
Formula: $$\text{Total Cost} = (\text{Carpet Cost } + \text{Labor Cost } + \text{Materials Cost } + \text{Padding Cost }) \times \text{Area} + (\text{Removal Cost} \times \text{Area})$$
Formula: $$\text{Cost per Square Foot} = \frac{\text{Total Cost}}{\text{Area}}$$
Example
Let's say you have a carpet area of 100 sq ft, using medium grade carpet, with fixed costs for labor, materials, padding, and optionally carpet removal.
Step 1: Calculate the total cost range:
$$\text{Total Cost Min} = (2 + 2 + 0.5 + 1) \times 100 = 550$$
$$\text{Total Cost Max} = (4 + 3 + 1.5 + 2) \times 100 = 1,050$$
If including carpet removal:
$$\text{Total Cost Min} = (2 + 2 + 0.5 + 1 + 1) \times 100 = 650$$
$$\text{Total Cost Max} = (4 + 3 + 1.5 + 2 + 3) \times 100 = 1,350$$
Step 2: Calculate the cost per square foot:
$$\text{Cost per Square Foot Min} = \frac{550}{100} = 5.50$$
$$\text{Cost per Square Foot Max} = \frac{1,050}{100} = 10.50$$
If including carpet removal:
$$\text{Cost per Square Foot Min} = \frac{650}{100} = 6.50$$
$$\text{Cost per Square Foot Max} = \frac{1,350}{100} = 13.50$$
So, the total cost range is $550 - $1,050 (or $650 - $1,350 with removal), and the cost per square foot range is $5.50 - $10.50 (or $6.50 - $13.50 with removal).
